    Pre-Separation Air Filtration System
This time-saving technology boosts the efficiency of the engine’s filter system, doubling the time between air filter cleanings. Air drawn into the engine is first separated via centrifugal force, ejecting the heavier dirt particles before being routed to the air filter. This pre-separation means less dirt to be captured by the air filter, resulting in less frequent cleaning and maintenance.

    Anti-Vibration System

    IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor
The IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor is designed to automatically adjust the air/fuel ratio when the air filter becomes restricted or partially clogged and maintains the engine’s correct RPM. IntelliCarb™ uses air from the clean side of the air filter to control the diaphragm and flow of fuel. As the air filter becomes dirty and less air is available for the carburetor, the IntelliCarb™ system adjusts the fuel flow to compensate for the decrease in air flow. This is in contrast to typical carburetors that utilize this air from the “dirty” side of the air box.
  • Zoom
    Side-Access Chain Tensioner
The side-access chain tensioner makes it much more convenient for the user to adjust the saw chain with a bar wrench as opposed to the typical location of the guide bar adjustment screw.
  • Zoom
Toolless fuel and oil caps with retainers
Simply lift the lever and twist the caps to remove or tighten. There‘s no need to use a tool to tighten or loosen.

Important Information
WARNING! The occurrence called “kickback” can cause serious or fatal injury. Always read the instruction manual carefully before using your saw. STIHL uses a green and yellow color-coding system to help you select a powerhead, bar and chain combination that complies with the kickback requirements of ANSI Standard B175.1 (gasoline-powered saws) and §30 of UL 1662/ ANSI Standard B175.1 (electric chain saws). Ask your STIHL dealer about safe operating procedures and the advantages of the STIHL Quickstop® chain brake, STIHL Quickstop® Plus additional chain braking feature (Q), STIHL reduced kickback bars and STIHL low-kickback saw chains.

STIHL recommends the use of green reduced kickback bars and green low kickback chains on all STIHL chain saws.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Love this saw Chews through wood like it isn't even there . Will tackle any job put in front of it with ease. April 27, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Perfect saw for home owner who needs a bigger unit. A true work saw. Equipped unit with a 25" bar and skip chain and handles big tree rounds with ease. Found keeping bar oil topped off after monster cuts is a must. Love this saw! April 18, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by This thing eats wood like there is no tommorrow I have been a faithful Stihl Chainsaw owner and user for over 15 years. This saw is much more powerful than any of my previous saws. It runs smooth and with the right chain, cuts right through the wood regardless of size. I have had it for over a week and I have already had 8 complete tanks of fuel through it. Ive dropped trees, cut firewood, and cleaned up brush. It never hesitated and cut through wood like a knife through butter. My local Stihl dealer knows me and recommended this saw to me. I couldn't be happier. I would recommended this saw to those that are serious about cutting firewood. It is a large saw and should not be used by those that don't know what they are doing. April 16, 2015
Rated 1 out of 5 by none i purchased a 391 2 years ago the first year i cut only 3 cord of wood soft maple this year i 4 cord of cut only 3/4 cord of cherry the saw over heated now i have a box of parts April 2, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by ms 391 The Stihl ms 391 is a great chain saw i cut and sell usually 100 cords of firewood a year and this saw made is through one year with no problem. Great saw runs great and i run a 16 and 25 inch bar. This saw turns a 25 inch bar with no problem March 31, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great running mid-range saw. The saw starts easily, runs great, and has great anti-vibe mounts. Great saw for the price and power. I'm also impressed with the oiler. It seems to handle longer bars with ease. I'm happy with my investment. March 29, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by A Beast Right Out Of The Box I've been a Stihl user for quite a few years now. Bought an 025 back in 1998 when I was a city dweller to cut fire wood for the fireplace. Used that saw over the years, and still use it today. Runs great and is easy to maintain.Moved to the great North woods of Montana a while back and quickly found out that the old 025, while a great saw, just couldn't keep up with the wood demand of those cold Montana winters. Now I just use that saw for limbing and felling smaller tress around the property.Went to my local Stihl dealer to look for a new saw. I had done my homework and went straight to the MS391. Got it home and gassed her up. Now, I've read some reviews about hard starting and flooding with this saw and the only comment I have is...not true. I figured "heck, I'll just start this saw just like I start my old 025 saw, and let's see what happens." What happened was, it started right up and was purring like a kitten ready to thrash my now trembling wood pile.In all seriousness, if started correctly, this saw fires right up. On a cold start, as soon as the saw burps, switch the lever to the warm start position and it'll fire up on the next pull. My old 025 starts the same way my new fire breather does.As for performance, well, I was blowing through 30" rounds like a hot knife through butter. I have the 25" bar and the saw performed flawlessly. I wouldn't recommend this saw to the average Joe but, if you're cutting 4-7 cords a season like I do, then yes, absolutely, I would recommend this saw.I've seen comments about weight as well. I'm an older guy and well, I just don't see it as a heavy saw. A friend of mine has a Husky (poor guy) and I didn't see a noticeable difference between saws. For how fast the saw cuts, you're not really holding it all that long to begin with. March 26, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by STIHL FOR LIFE After going through several other saws that rhyme with...raftsman..I took the plunge, spent the extra money, and went to the Stihl dealer. I'm not one to buy new, expensive stuff. I prefer someone else do that, break it, then I buy it cheap and fix it. Problem is, Stihl maintains its value. So everyone selling one used wants retail price! I have not the first regret in this purchase. I pull the string a couple times, she cranks right up. I pull the trigger, whatever is in the way is...cut..quickly and with ease. I only cut hard wood. My last project was a red oak about 6 ft at the base. The 391 has yet to complain. It's happy place is all 20" of the bar buried in oak shooting fat chunks of sawdust from it's rear. Love this saw. No regrets. Nice work Stihl, thank you. Oh yeah, it's a lil heavy. March 20, 2015
