    IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor
The IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor is designed to automatically adjust the air/fuel ratio when the air filter becomes restricted or partially clogged and maintains the engine’s correct RPM. IntelliCarb™ uses air from the clean side of the air filter to control the diaphragm and flow of fuel. As the air filter becomes dirty and less air is available for the carburetor, the IntelliCarb™ system adjusts the fuel flow to compensate for the decrease in air flow. This is in contrast to typical carburetors that utilize this air from the “dirty” side of the air box.

    Side-Access Chain Tensioner
The side-access chain tensioner makes it much more convenient for the user to adjust the saw chain with a bar wrench as opposed to the typical location of the guide bar adjustment screw.

    STIHL Quickstop®
STIHL chain saws are equipped with a chain stopping system designed to reduce the risk of injury in certain kickback situations. It is called a STIHL Quickstop® chain brake. The STIHL Quickstop® chain brake is designed to stop the rotation of the chain if activated by the operator’s hand or by inertia if the saw kicks back with sufficient force. In some working positions, the STIHL Quickstop® chain brake can be activated by inertia, stopping the chain within fractions of a second.

    Ematic™ Lubrication System
The Ematic™ guide bar when used with STIHL OILOMATIC® saw chain will provide proper lubrication and less oil consumption than conventional methods. The system works because two ramps, strategically placed in the guide bar rail, help contain the flow of oil and direct all lubrication to the sliding faces of the bar and chain links as well as the rivets and driver holes, which in turn can reduce bar oil consumption up to 50%.

    Master Control Lever™
The Master Control Lever™ is an easy to use single lever, operating the choke, starting throttle lock and on-off switch. The operator must pull the throttle trigger before moving the Master Control Lever™ to the choke position.
  • Zoom
    Decompression Valve
The decompression valve, also referred to as 'deco' or 'deco valve', vents compression in the cylinder for easier starting. The decompression valve temporarily reduces the compression in the combustion chamber during cranking and helps reduce the effort needed to pull the starter rope. It is opened manually and closes automatically as soon as the engine fires.

STIHL uses a green and yellow color-coding system to help you select a powerhead, bar and chain combination that complies with the kickback requirements of ANSI Standard B175.1 (gasoline-powered saws) and §30 of UL 1662/ ANSI Standard B175.1 (electric chain saws). Ask your STIHL dealer about safe operating procedures and the advantages of the STIHL Quickstop® chain brake, STIHL Quickstop® Plus additional chain braking feature (Q), STIHL reduced kickback bars and STIHL low-kickback saw chains.

STIHL recommends the use of green reduced kickback bars and green low kickback chains on all STIHL chain saws.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Great chainsaw I have used my 391 for about 10 truck loads of wood since buying it. It runs like a dream. Have not had any issues with starting it and i only use stihl moto mix. The saw is a little heavier than my stihl 038 but not by much. It is a great saw and I would recomend it to everyone. April 10, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by A joy to use. I moved up from saw about same as the MS 290 which was very pleased with but age got to it. This saw is a pleasure to use. Cranks good, very good power with 20 inch bar and it just loves to cut. Spend the difference to buy over lower horsepower. April 1, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by wow what a saw Don't buy anything but the 391 it gets the job done in half the time. May be heavy but cuts twice fast as smaller ones 250 and 290 sit on the shelf March 22, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Very nice powerful saw. Got the saw had a 25 inch bar, requested a full chisel chain the dealer did not charge for. The first tree it saw was a 32 inch maple had the tree on the ground and cut up in 38 minutes. After the first 4 tanks of moto mix through this baby came alive it has never took more than 4 pulls to start and the weather has been 10-20 deg F. I had to turn the bar lube to MAX because of the temp. The air filter is still clean but i had bought a replacement for a spare. (the 361 pro saw is the same but pleated) This is my first STIHL and it is great. I had stopped using the decompression valve because there is no need and is an extra step. Remember full choke one pull, fire-Second pull Half choke, fire up third pull fire up. NEVER MORE THAN 4. March 18, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great all around Saw. I use this saw for around the property Tree removal, and I also use it during storms to remove trees from roads, as a volunteer Fire Fighter a dependable Saw is mandatory. My STIHL 391 is a Very Dependable Saw. February 22, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great saw I have had my 391 for a while and did not get to use it due to shoulder surgery. Well I'am able to use it now and this baby flat cuts I cut and blocked several large oak trees and it was awesome, it cut them up like a knife through warm butter. It was recommended to me by my son a journeyman tree trimmer doing power line work. He said they have several and they are a terrific saw, he is absolutely right. I highly recommend one for heavy cutting of larger trees. February 21, 2014
Rated 3 out of 5 by Has great features . Would be an excellent saw if it wouldn't take so many pulls to start it . Plenty of power and fast cutting . Not a dependable saw . February 20, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by The best saw I have ever cut with. I own 3 other saws, all STIHL, 009, 026, 029, all great saws, but the 391 is a fine saw.I use it on big wood, there is no quit in that saw. February 17, 2014
